At the beginning of each of the state-by-state listings in the Beer Lovers Guide to the USA we include quick picks -- regional beers to look for, essential stops, places that are just plain fun and the best city for a pub crawl.

CONNECTICUT
Regional beers to look for: New England Brewing and Hammer & Nail Brewery.
Essential stops: Eli Cannon's in Middletown, Main Street Cafe in Willimantic and BrüRm at BAR in New Haven. The latter is across the street from the venerable Louis Lunch, which claims to have invented the hamburger.
Just for fun: The Griswold Inn in Essex. Afternoons beside the piano in the Tap Room.
Best city for a pub crawl: Hartford.

MAINE
Regional beers to look for: Maine is full of wonderful small breweries, so the short list has Geary's Brewing, Allagash Brewing, Sunday River Brewing, Shipyard Brewing and Sea Dog Brewing.
Essential stops: The Great Lost Bear and Gritty McDuff's in Portland.
Just for fun: The Lompoc Cafe in Bangor. Bocce ball and beer.
Best city for a pub crawl: Portland.

MASSACHUSSETTS
Regional beers to look for: The Boston Beer Co. has a pilot brewery in Jamaica Plain but has most of the Samuel Adams beers are contract-brewed elsewhere. Nonetheless, it's a beer to look for. Also, Tremont Ale (from Atlantic Coast Brewing), Ipswich Brewing and Mass Bay (Harpoon) Brewing.
Essential stops: Doyle's in Jamaica Plain, Boston Beer Works, Sunset Grill & Tap and Big City in Boston (actually Allston) and Redbones in Somerville.
Just for fun: Redbones in Somerville. Can't decide what to order? They'll spin the big wheel and let it pick the tap for you.
Best city for a pub crawl: Boston.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
Regional beers to look for: Smuttynose Brewing, Nutfield Brewing, the Lucknow beers from Castle Springs Brewing.
Essential stop: Martha's Exchange.
Just for fun: Woodstock Inn & Brewing Co. in North Woodstock. Spend a Brewers Weekend in the Victorian Inn, making and drinking beer.
